Chikoko Tree Walking Camp

Situated on the west bank within the South Luangwa National Park, a short distance upstream from its parent camp, Tafika, the Chikoko Walking Camp are accessible solely by foot, providing an extraordinary opportunity for immersive walking safaris in the heart of the remote African wilderness. Walking through this untamed landscape, you’ll discover the finer details of the bush, from its captivating scents to the intricacies of the macro world, evoking a timeless connection with nature. On foot, the once towering giants of the herbivore world, such as giraffes and elephants, become graceful companions as you share eye-level encounters with buffalo. Tracking the previous night’s lion footprints turns the tables on the Luangwa’s predators, making them your pursuit. It’s the genuine, heart-pounding moments, like standing downwind from an elephant and catching its unmistakable scent, that etch walking safaris into your memory as truly unforgettable experiences.

At Chikoko Tree Camp, your day begins with the gentle embrace of a Zambian sunrise, accompanied by the backdrop of early morning hippo bellows and the melodious symphony of birdsong. A friendly knock on your door signals the start of your adventure. A relaxed breakfast unfolds around the campfire, offering the perfect start to your day. You can participate in a 4-hour walking safari to take in the wonders of the wilderness at a leisurely pace. A pause for morning tea provides an opportunity to absorb the surroundings. The midday sun invites you to a delicious buffet lunch, graced with freshly harvested greens from the camp's garden. As the day's heat peaks, it's siesta time at the camp. Here, you can unwind in the company of nature, perhaps reviewing your lists of the remarkable flora and fauna encountered, or simply indulging in a good read from one of the inviting hammocks.

In the late afternoon, a 2.5 to 3-hour walking safari takes you deeper into the landscape, returning before the sun dips below the horizon. Sundown is a time to enjoy pre-dinner drinks and snacks around the campfire, sharing stories of your day's explorations. Dinner is a culmination of your Chikoko Tree Camp experience, a three-course meal illuminated by candlelight and accompanied by the sounds of the African night. Under the protection of cotton sheets and mosquito nets, you drift into slumber while the lullabies of the Luangwa serenade you with the distant roars of lions. This is the essence of Chikoko Tree Camp, where every day is a poetic journey through the wilds of South Luangwa National Park.

General Information

When to Travel:
The best time to visit the Luangwa Valley is during the dry season between May and October. All outlying water dries up and forces game to congregate around watering holes and rivers, while the vegetation starts to thin out, making it easier to spot wildlife. Tafika Camp, operating seasonally, welcomes guests from May to mid-November. The latter part of the dry season is especially warm and offers prime wildlife sighting opportunities.

All Room Includes:
Accommodation, all meals, shared local road transfers from/to Mfuwe airport for incoming/outgoing flights and transfers to ongoing camp for guests staying +3 nights at Remote Africa Camps, bar (inclusive of house wine), laundry, game viewing activities (guided walking safaris)

All Rooms Excludes:
Conservation, National Park and fixed fees (tourism levy and service charge), superior wines (available upon request), shared local road transfers from/to Mfuwe airport and ongoing camps for guests staying less than 3 nights at Remote Africa Camps

Activities: Walking safaris guided by an expert
Unparalleled and pure walking safaris in remote areas of the Luangwa Valley. Enjoy an intimate safari experience tracking wild animals on natural wildlife trails through wilderness that is only accessible on foot and untarnished by vehicle tracks.
Walking safaris are always lead by an experienced Remote Africa Safaris guide, an armed National Park scout and accompanied by a tea bearer. Morning walks are approximately 4 hours long with a pace set by the present walkers.
Enjoy a rest along the way for a hot cup of tea or coffee and sweet treat alongside a lagoon and soak up the natural surrounds. The Chikoko Trails walking safari area was identified by Norman Carr as a prime walking area, the Chikoko Tree Camp site identified as his own chosen walking campsite in the ‘60s. On foot guests are given the rare opportunity to experience the bush at nature’s pace and to be immersed in the wonders that present themselves at every turn.
Go back in time and learn how to make fire the natural way with some sticks, elephant dung and a touch of skill. Discover the delights of the bush, from the fascinating insects that live within animal droppings, tiny elephant shrews, delicate wide-eyed antelope to towering giraffe, enormous elephant and huge herds of buffalo with prides of lion in tow. Predators become the prey as you track lion’s prints from the night before to their resting place of that day.
