Camp Hwange

A rustic, traditional camp of 8 canvas-walled units beneath cooling thatch, Camp Hwange overlooks one of the natural waterholes that make this part of Hwange National Park special.

Founded in 2010 by a well-known professional guide, Camp Hwange’s location is strategic. This private concession in the central part of Hwange lies between the rugged mopane woodlands to the north and the sandy soil teak forests to the south-west; it’s location here on this open savannah ecotone means that game viewing is as diverse as its habitat types.

Aside from fantastic game viewing, especially in the drier months from April through to November, Camp Hwange offers an excellent guided experience with a strong emphasis on walking and tracking.

Located within a private concession in Central Hwange, Camp Hwange embodies the essence of a classic bush camp. With eight canvas-walled units boasting thatch roofs overlooking a natural watering hole, it offers an authentic safari experience right from the camp. Whether it’s the chorus of frogs at the waterhole, the distant call of a lone hyena, or the thunderous roars of the resident lion pride, we want you to fully experience the sights, sounds, and scents of Africa.

Surrounded by diverse landscapes, from rugged mopane woodlands in the north to sandy teak forests in the southwest, guests are promised varied game-viewing opportunities. Beyond the remarkable game viewing, particularly during the drier months from April to November, Camp Hwange invites guests on an unforgettable guided journey focused on walking and tracking.

Your days at Camp Hwange will be spent exploring remote parts of Hwange, tracking wildlife on foot, and on game drives. While we utilize 4x4 vehicles for safe game drives, particularly when observing large mammals like lions and elephants for exceptional photographic opportunities, we're not ones to stay confined to vehicles for too long.

A vast majority of guests find themselves venturing on foot at some point during their stay. Whether it's quietly observing elephants as they drink from concealed seasonal pans from our custom log pile hides, or actively tracking and viewing various species ranging from elephant bulls to buffalo herds, lion prides, and everything in between.

The richness of the area ensures regular sightings of iconic mega-fauna such as elephants, buffalo, hippos, and giraffes, as well as carnivores like lions, spotted hyenas, cheetahs, leopards, and wild dogs. However, it's the presence of species like sable antelopes, roan antelopes, elands, southern reedbucks, and even the common springhare that truly excites us here.

When to Travel:
Camp Hwange is the ideal all-year-round safari destination. The drier months, between April and November, offer excellent wildlife viewing opportunities as animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot. Additionally, the vegetation is less dense during this time, further enhancing visibility. In central Hwange, temperatures during the dry season from June to October usually hover around the mid-20s during the day, while nights can cool down to below 10 degrees Celsius.

For Birders, the best time to visit Camp Hwange is between November and April. The wet summer months attract a host of migratory species. However, during the wet season, temperatures are generally warmer, with daytime highs ranging above 30 degrees Celsius.
