RABAT – MEKNES – VOLUBILIS - FEZ. ≥300KM

Leaving Rabat to Meknes the old capital of the Sultan Moulay Idriss – his stables there once housed 12,000 horses – stopping at the famous Bab Mansour before continuing to the Roman city of Volubilis renowned for its remarkably preserved mosaics. A full day to visit the oldest Imperial city in Morocco with the oldest university in the world. See the old Medina - Fez El Bali - the Andalusian and the Karaouine quarter with its dyers and tanners and artisans working in the style of their forefathers. A day of contrast, leaving behind Fez and its Medina stopping at Ifrane with its Alpine type scenery and the Cedar Forests of Azrou. Continuing on through the Middle Atlas to arrive in the city of Marrakech for dinner and overnight. BD

Full day introduction to this Garden City, visit the dramatic Almohad Koutoubia Minaret and the lavishly-decorated Saadien Tombs – some dating from the middle 1550s. Spend some time in the tranquil Menara Gardens and the Bahia Palace before walking through the labyrinth of narrow alleyways making up the renowned cool, colourful and aromatic Souks of Marrakech.
The Dyers’ Souk being the last to be visited you emerge into the famous Djemâa el Fna Square (which translates as ‘Assembly of the Dead’), where, until the 19th century, the severed heads of criminals were traditionally displayed. Now we see stalls of goods, from fruit to alarm clocks; snake charmers and water sellers; fortune tellers and public scribes; tumblers and nakkachat - women with syringes full of henna – soothsayers and gnaoua musicians. If you fancy something a bit more adventurous, and to get to know the Morocco away from the tourist scene, this is for you. A short transfer into the palm groves brings you to the base where you will be fitted out with safety equipment and vehicle, which can carry a driver & passenger. After vehicle familiarisation (all automatic gearboxes), head off through Berber countryside villages, stopping to enjoy spectacular views. 4hrs total (3hrs in the saddle) you may want to consider a massage the next day!

Moroccan Cookery Class La Maison Arabe: 95$ per person – Min 2PAx
Your cooking workshop starts with a general introduction to Moroccan cooking, highlighting the importance of cooking in Moroccan society, and the role played over the centuries by the Dada –the traditional female cook. Get an overview of the most traditional recipes such as Pastilla, Cous cous and the many Tagines; with descriptions of the ingredients and the all-important spices, and the different methods of cooking. Participants are then acquainted with the recipe of the day and review the ingredients that will be used. Each participant has his/her own workstation and equipment and follows step by step the preparation of the dish. A typical workshop teaches an appetizer/salad and a main dish. After class it’s time to taste the final results!! The participants enjoy the meal they have prepared in the shade of fig or olive trees by the hotel pool.

High Atlas Adventure: 130$ per person – Min 2PAx
Begin with an exciting drive south through to one of Morocco’s longest and most beautifully refreshing valley of Ourika, teeming with lush vegetation, palmeraies, steep-sides gorges, ancient terraced irrigated fields and Berber hamlets. Continue through hills of ever-changing colours, in the midst of olive groves, through the Jbel Oukaïmeden range, where the snow falls every winter. Now circle down to the Berber hamlet of Tahanaoute, up and over the hairpin bends of the Moulay Brahim Gorges and through the village of Asni which holds a popular Saturday Souk. Upon arrival at the Berber trailhead town of Imlil (1740m) enjoy a delicious traditional lunch (inc) on the terrace of a gîte d’étape. With the mighty Jbel Toubkal - at 4167m the highest peak in the Maghreb - almost within touching distance, set off on a guided walk to the Berber village of Aremd (1843m). Rest a while in this village built house upon house on a large moraine spur, overlooking ancient irrigated terraced fields of barley, corn and vegetables surrounded by walnut and almond trees then return through spectacular scenery to rejoin the vehicle at Imlil for the return to Marrakech.

Discover the original inhabitants of Morocco, the Berbers, as you travel in a 4x4 across the rugged landscapes of the Atlas Mountains. Discover smiling faces, quaint villages built of pisé clawed from the mountain slopes and an ancestral lifestyle which many thought had disappeared long ago. Nature rules supreme in these regions and dictates the existence of these tribal men and women. Depending on the season, you will discover lush valleys & slopes full of sheep or snow-covered summits. Take in the peaceful scenery all around as you enjoy lunch (inc) in the charming Ourika valley.

Historic & beautiful Essaouira has elements of many influences over the centuries, from Romans to Portuguese, French & Dutch. A drive along the Hadouz plain brings you to this traditional village, once the main port of Morocco, now mainly relying on fishing, tourism, and artisans. Walk through the unspoilt Medina to discover the craftsmen, wood-carvers & artists, and sample the amazing seafood in the harbour restaurants (lunch not inc).
